Internationality is a Strength for Oulu
One of Oulu’s key strengths has always been its internationality and openness. History has shaped Oulu into an international meeting point, constantly open to new people combined with unique local identity.
Oulu has been an international hub since the 18th century. Trade and cultural traditions persist. The globally recognized university and growing tech industry have further strengthened Oulu’s global ties.
Oulu continues to diversify. Residents reflect various cultures and backgrounds. That’s a strength. We need new people to the city, and many will come from abroad.
Nordic welfare state is inherently pluralistic and free. Cultural diversity is a part of a democratic society. Our rights are protected by law, which also sets limits for acceptable behavior.
The city must offer safety and services for everyone, regardless of origin. Internationality and openness remain vital to Oulu’s development and vitality.
Challenges exist in integrating newcomers, but problems aren’t solved by dividing people based on their background. Collaboration is the solution, and the key lies in investing in future generations. Young people in Oulu, no matter their roots, are building the city’s future. As a youth football coach, I see that today’s kids care more about teamwork than appearance or heritage. An example many adults should follow.
Communities also play a role. In 2017-18 I took part in an integration project through the AC Oulu Villan Pojat football team, which brought together native Oulu residents and newcomers. It became an important space for connection and mutual understanding.
We need more such meeting points, better language education, and support services for immigrant families. I hope Oulu’s next city council builds on our international roots to shape a shared future, combat racism, and strengthen community, because fear and division only bring harm. Oulu thrives when we work together.
